Clarkson, a Toronto fashion designer and former Genie-nominated actress, founded the line in 2014. Her answer was versatile, wrinkle-resistant clothing designed for the carry-on suitcase, including reversible pieces and separates that can be worn in different ways.

There is a particularly strong Canadian manufacturing story here. Hélène Clarkson Design clothing is designed and sewn in Toronto and made in Canada in small batches.

Outdoor gear designed for Canadian weather

Northbound Gear

Northbound Gear began with two brothers and a familiar Canadian frustration: outdoor clothing that did not hold up when the weather turned.

Founded in 2019, the family-run business set out to build a wardrobe for Canadian conditions. The brand says its products are designed in Vancouver, shaped by West Coast rain and built with the idea that outdoor clothing should be durable enough for the elements but simple enough for everyday use.

Its breakthrough was the Adventure Pants, a water-resistant fleece pant that moved from one practical solution into a broader outdoor apparel line. Northbound says more than 140,000 pairs have been sold worldwide.

Activewear that started with an overloaded closet

Some businesses begin with a detailed market study. Bäre Activewear began with a joke about how much activewear co-founder Jessica Bulldog owned.

Jessica has written about cleaning out the closet when her husband Lorne suggested that, given the size of her activewear collection, they might as well own an activewear company. The joke became a real conversation and eventually a business the couple built together while also starting a young family.

Their relatable beginning says a lot about the brand they went on to build: down-to-earth, approachable and made for people like themselves.

Canadian lingerie with a designer’s point of view

Less Is Amor

Less Is Amor was created in 2015 by Toronto designer Irina Shad after she studied Fashion Design and Techniques at George Brown College and completed an international fashion-house internship in India.

Shad has also worked as a costumer in Toronto’s film industry, with credits across major film and television productions, while continuing to develop her own label.

The brand focuses on lingerie and loungewear, with an emphasis on fit, comfort, lace, silk and more sustainable sourcing. Less Is Amor makes its loungewear in Toronto, Latvia and Ukraine, using silk sourced through Montréal-based TÉLIO and other fabrics from European mills.

Less Is Amor favourites on Shoppa include bras, bodysuits, underwear, garters and silk pyjamas.
