What is Bunchberry?
Bunchberry, also known as Canadian dogwood, is a very common plant in Quebec's coniferous forests. This North American native perennial produces pretty little cream-white flowers. Its berries are edible and enjoyed when used in pies, puddings, jams, or simply eaten raw. The plant can be used in infusions, and some even smoke its leaves like tobacco.
How to use Bunchberry?
As an infusion, alone or mixed with other Nordic plants, for a deeply aromatic and comforting herbal tea. It also integrates into cooking to flavor sauces and desserts with a unique forest note. Traditionally, it is also used in steam baths or as a decoction, appreciated for its soothing scent and beneficial properties for the skin.
Its natural habitat
Bunchberry is an excellent, dense ground cover, with a beautiful dark green color and easy to grow provided there is humidity. Indeed, it tolerates almost all types of soil, acidic and neutral, grows in full sun or partial shade, and is not sensitive to frost.
Its flowers bloom from early summer until late autumn. There is no need to worry about having male or female plants to obtain fruit, as the species is hermaphroditic (both sexes' organs on the same plant).
